How to Calculate Canvas Fabric GSM and Weight for Bulk Orders
Learn how to calculate and verify canvas fabric GSM for bulk procurement. Covers the GSM formula, testing tools, weight calculation for rolls, and how to cross-check supplier claims to avoid underweight fabric shipments.

Receiving underweight fabric is one of the most common B2B canvas complaints. A roll labeled "10oz" that actually weighs 9.2oz means you are paying for material you did not receive. This guide shows you how to independently verify fabric weight.
The GSM Calculation Formula
GSM = (Sample weight in grams) × 100. Using a GSM cutter (100 cm² circular die), weigh the cut circle on a precision scale (0.01g accuracy) and multiply by 100. Example: A 100 cm² circle weighs 3.40g → GSM = 340. For ounces: oz/yd² = GSM ÷ 33.906.
Calculating Full Roll Weight
Roll weight (kg) = GSM × Width (meters) × Length (meters) ÷ 1000. Example: A 100-meter roll of 340 GSM canvas at 1.5m width: 340 × 1.5 × 100 ÷ 1000 = 51 kg. Use this formula to verify that received rolls match the ordered specification.
Sampling Protocol for Bulk Orders
For orders over 5,000 meters, test at least 3 samples per production lot: one from the beginning of the run, one from the middle, and one from the end. GSM should not vary more than ±5 across the entire lot. Larger variations indicate inconsistent yarn tension or blending issues.
