Canvas Fabric Specifications: A Complete B2B Procurement Checklist
Every canvas fabric buyer needs a clear specification sheet before ordering. Use this 10-point checklist covering GSM, fiber composition, weave, width, finish, color, certification, packaging, lead time, and inspection criteria to avoid miscommunication with your supplier.

The #1 cause of B2B canvas order disputes is incomplete specifications. A vague order like "10oz cotton canvas, navy blue" leaves too much room for interpretation. This checklist covers every parameter you should specify before signing a purchase order.
1. GSM (Fabric Weight) with Tolerance
Specify both the target GSM and acceptable tolerance. Example: 340 GSM ± 10 GSM (not just "10oz canvas"). Standard tolerance is ±5 GSM for quality mills. Tighter tolerances are available but increase cost.
2. Fiber Composition & Blend Ratio
Be exact: "100% Cotton" vs "T/C 65/35" vs "CVC 80/20". Request a burn test certificate or lab report for verification. Blended fabrics should state the exact polyester-cotton ratio — a 5% variance changes performance and price.
3. Weave Structure
Plain weave (1/1) or twill weave (2/1 or 3/1). Specify the exact weave. For plain weave, also specify the thread count per inch in warp and weft if critical.
4. Width (Fabric Width)
Specify usable/cuttable width, not total width. Common standards: 44-45" (traditional), 58-60" (modern standard), 72"+ (wide-width for bedding). Always ask: is this total width or cuttable width? The selvage (non-usable edge) is typically 1-2cm per side.
5. Finish & Treatment
Greige (loomstate), PFD (prepared for dyeing), piece-dyed, printed, coated (wax, PVC, PU), water-repellent, flame-retardant, pre-shrunk, anti-microbial. Each finish adds cost and lead time.
6. Color Matching
Specify Pantone code or provide a physical color standard. Request a lab dip (color sample) for approval before bulk production. Allow 5-7 business days for lab dips. Note: small batch colors may have slight shade variation (±10% is industry standard).
7-10. Certification, Packaging, Lead Time & Inspection
Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GOTS (organic), BCI (Better Cotton). Packaging: Rolled on tubes vs flat-folded, poly bag vs woven bag, labels and barcodes. Lead time: Stock 3-5 days, custom production 15-25 days. Inspection: Specify AQL level (AQL 2.5 is standard for textiles), 4-point system, or your own criteria.
